Every once in awhile, you'll hear a statistic so striking you can hardly believe it's true. Our first impulse is to repeat it, because knowing interesting things tends to make people like us better. But how many of them are actually true?

Who else remembers The Electric Company?
 The children's show was one of my favorites growing up, and it featured several performers who went on to become stars on the big screen, including Morgan Freeman. (I loved him as the "Easy Reader" -- check out this video with fellow cast member Rita Moreno.)
The show is coming back for a new generation, and production is scheduled to begin today. New episodes will start airing in January.
"Sure to spark a current of learning, the new version of The Electric Company is a multi-media, multi-platform literacy campaign charged with reducing the literacy gap between low and middle income families and advance the ideal that ‘reading is cool,’" reads a press release I received yesterday.
Attached is a photo from the updated version of the series. I'll be waiting to see what it looks like ... and whether classics like these shadowy faces or Spider-Man return.
